Hebrews 7 Bible Study

In Hebrews 7:1-3, Abraham gathered a group of fighting men to attack the confederation of the kings to save his nephew Lot who had been taken captive (Genesis 14). After Abraham had conquered the kings and saved Lot, Melchizedek the king of Salem appeared and thanked him for what he did. Then, Abraham gave 1/10 of the plunder to him. Melchizedek is the king of righteousness and the king of peace. Only through righteousness can a person have peace. Jesus Christ is the ultimate high priest and mediator (Hebrews 9:15). He is a high priest for us for eternity. He purchased us with his blood by dying on the cross once and for all so that anyone who believe in him can be saved. It is important to give tithe. Not giving tithe is robbing from God (Malachi 3:9).

In Hebrews 7:4-10, the Levites collect the tithes because it is a commandment for the Israelites to pay tithes. Abraham’s giving is greater because he gave the tithes voluntarily. Abraham, from whom the 12 tribes of Israel came from, also represents the Levites paying tithes to Melchizedek so it shows that the priesthood of Melchizedek was over Abraham. Abraham is the lesser who is blessed by the greater, Melchizedek. Abraham shows that he is lesser by accepting Melchizedek’s blessings.

In Hebrews 7:11-19, perfection could not be attained through the Levitical priesthood so there is a need for another priesthood. According to Moses Law, only the descendants of Aaron can serve as priests at the altar. Jesus is not a descendant of Aaron or a Levite. He was descended from the Judah tribe. The priesthood of Jesus is not based on the Law of Moses but on the power of God’s eternal life. He is fully human and fully God. He is our priest forever, unlike the Levite priests which will only serve as priests temporarily on earth until their lives come to an end. The law made nothing perfect because it only shows that you are a sinner but it cannot help you to overcome sin. Now, we have a better hope in Jesus . Through Jesus, we can have a grace relationship with God.

In Hebrews 7:20-28, the priesthood of Aaron is by heredity while the priesthood of Jesus is by personal character. Jesus Christ himself is the guarantor of a better covenant, the new covenant. The priesthood of Jesus will never change because he never die and his priesthood is permanent. The salvation that Jesus gives is permanent and secure. Those who abide in Jesus Christ and do his commandments will have fellowship with the Father. Jesus Christ is always interceding for us. The priest from the descendants of Aaron did not have the flawless character of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is holy and completely good. He is a perfect priest because he was exalted into the heaven and he does not need to offer sacrifices for his own sins, like other priests. Because Jesus’ character made him a perfect high priest, he is qualified to offer himself as a ransom for our sins.
