2 Timothy 3 Bible Study

In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Paul said during the last days, many Christians will be self centered. They will be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:2-4). They will appear to have a form of godliness but deny its power. They will claim to be Christians but selfish and care only for their ownselves.

Jesus Christ is coming back soon. The bible says before Jesus Christ comes back for the second time, disasters will take place one after another around the world (2 Peter 3:3-4; 1 John 2:18). Jesus will only come after the gospel has been preached to all over the world. Recently, there have been lots of disasters in the news. In the last days, many false preachers will emerge and preach the false doctrine. Many Christians will love the world more than Jesus. Nowadays, there are many reports of evangelists, preachers and churches that use the tithes and offerings of the people not for charity, but for their selfish gains. Some churches even support secular music by the artist of the world and secular Christian rock music to draw people to Jesus Christ. Secular Christian rock music can destroy the presence of God in the church. The devil is using secular Christian rock music and worldly rock music in the churches to lead the people astray from God so that they will lose their gifts of salvation and end up in hell. Christians must not compromise with the world and give the devil a foothold (Ephesians 4:27; James 4:7).

In 2 Timothy 3:6-7, the Christian who are astray from God will lead other people into the same sin as themselves. Those who will be deceived by their preaching are gullible and ignorant about the word of God. The preaching of the false preachers may look right to the Christians but actually, they are preaching a false doctrine. For example, gospel that embraces worldly practices such as secular music, tattoo, yoga and etc is wrong. It is important that Christians read the word of God so that they know how to discern between right and wrong teaching. The bible is the word of God so you must read the bible regularly. If you don’t understand something in the bible, you can reference the commentary. There are many free commentaries on the internet. You should pray for the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom to understand the bible before reading it. You can also ask your pastor or fellow Christians if you don’t understand what you read in the bible. These preachers will be stubborn to humble down and acknowledge their sins although they will always be learning.

In 2 Timothy 3:8, Jannes and Jambres are the two magicians that turned two sticks into snakes, when Aaron turned the staff in his hand into a snake. Despite that, Aaron’s snake swallowed up the two snakes of the magicians (Exodus 7:8-13).

In 2 Timothy 3:9, Paul said these false preachers will not get very far because people will soon recognize their follies. God always punish the sinners. Preachers will be judged more strictly compare to the parishes. In Luke 12:48, those who has been given much, much will be demanded. Those who do things they don’t know will be beaten will few blows. God will execute his judgment on the sinners while they are on earth or after death.

In 2 Timothy 3:10-11, Paul remind Timothy that he should know all about his teaching, life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, persecutions, afflictions and how he had suffered for God in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra and how God rescued him.

In 2 Timothy 3:12-13, anyone who want to live a godly life must prepared to be persecuted and suffer for Jesus Christ. In James 1:12, blessed is the man who perseveres in trial. He will be endowed with the crown of life that God promised to those who love him. We must not deny Jesus Christ before anyone. Those who deny Jesus Christ, even when they believe in him, will be disacknowledged by Jesus Christ before the Father God (Matthew 10:33).

In 2 Timothy 3:14-15, Paul exhorted Timothy to continue in walking in the commandments of God, which he had learned since infancy by learning the holy scriptures. We must strive to obey all the commandments of God. Breaking a single commandment is equal to breaking the whole commandment (James 2:10).

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, all God’s words in the bible is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that God’s man can be equipped for every good work. Christians must read the bible regularly so that they won’t be easily swayed by other people’s teachings (Ephesians 4:14).
