Luke 17 Bible Study

In Luke 17:1-2, Jesus rebuke those that teach the children to sin. He said it would be better to throw them into the sea with millstones hanging around their neck. Parents should teach their children about God’s commandment since childhood so that they will be able to walk on the path of righteousness.

In Luke 17:3-4,we must always love each other in Christ. We should not criticize or take revenge on anyone. Instead, we should let God deal with the offender by himself (Romans 12:19). Jesus said you should forgive your offender if he comes to ask forgiveness from you. Christians must be merciful and have a compassionate heart for others. Christians must not have hatred in their heart. No matter how your enemy offended you, you must forgive him. If you refuse to forgive others, the Father God in heaven will not forgive you.

In Luke 17:5-6, the disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith. Then, Jesus told them about the parable of the mustard seed. Jesus said that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you will be able plant the sycamine tree in the sea by commanding it to do so.

In Luke 17:7-10, Jesus used the parable of the servant to tell his disciples that they must be humble and not seek for praises for what their services to God. If you receive rewards for the good things you done on earth, you will not receive any reward in heaven (Matthew 6:1).

In Luke 17:11-19, Jesus healed 10 people that suffer from leprosy. The ten lepers asked Jesus to have pity on them from afar. Jesus told them to show themselves to the priests. They did as Jesus told them to and they were healed from their leprosy while they were on their way. Whatever problem you face, you should tell it to Jesus in your prayer and ask him to help you. If you have faith in Jesus, he will help you to solve the problem. When praying to God for something, you must make sure you are asking in accordance to God’s will, not to please your fleshly desire (James 4:3). Of the ten lepers who got healed, only one came back to thank Jesus. The leper who return to thank Jesus is a Samaritan. Israel was divided into Judah and Israel during the revolt against Rehoboam (1 Kings 12). Samaria is the capital of Israel. The people of Israel are less godly than the people in Judah. Many people in Israel worship idols.

In Luke 17:20-37, Jesus described that the kingdom of God is not something you can obtain by observing it. Jesus is coming back for the second time. In the end time, many people will predict the coming of Jesus Christ by setting date but their prediction is false. Jesus said that no one knows when the second coming of Christ will take place. Only the Father God knows when the second coming of Christ will take place (Mark 13:32; Matthew 24:36). When Jesus comes for the second time, he will rapture the faithful followers who abide in his commandments completely to heaven and they will be with him forever (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Jesus described the rapture as one woman will be taken where there are two women grinding grain; one person taken away where two people are in bed. If you want to be the follower of Jesus, you must put God first in your life by sacrificing all you have to him including your family, career, money, and etc. In Luke 17:37, it means that when end the time happens, the church will be full of corruptions of worldly influences (2 Timothy 3:1-5).The end time will be followed by several signs of natural disasters that happen consecutively (Mark 13:7 – 8). Before the end will come, the gospel must be preach to all over the world.
