Luke 8 Bible Study

In Luke 8:1-15, Jesus told the parable of the sower to the people. The parable of the sower is about a sower who went out into the field to sow seeds. As he sow the seed, some seed fell along the path, some fell on rocky places, some fell among the thorns and some fell on a good soil. The seed is the gospel message. The field represents the people who hears the gospel message. The seeds that fall along the path are those that hear the gospel message but did not have faith so the gift of eternal life was stolen by the devil. The seeds that fall on the rocky places are those that have accepted the gospel message but did not have enough foundation so they fall away. The seeds that fall among the thorns are those that are worried about the things of this life and fall away from God. The seeds that fall on good soil are those that believe in the gospel message and serve God wholeheartedly. Jesus said that he tell the message of the kingdom of God in parable so that those that hear will not understand. Only with the help of the Holy Spirit, you can understand the word of God.

In Luke 8:16-18, Christians must shine their light on others. They must preach the gospel to the non believers that they can come to faith in Christ. If you know the word of God, you should teach it to others so that they can be edified. Nothing can be hidden from God. On the judgment day, God will judge us accordingly to what we have done on earth.

In Luke 8:19-21, Jesus’ mother and brothers were looking for him and someone told Jesus about it. Then, Jesus said his mother and brothers are those that do God’s will. We must not only say with our mouth that we will do God’s will but we must demonstrate it in our lives.

In Luke 8:22-25, a storm came up when Jesus and his disciples were in the boat. The storm caused the boat to be flooded with water. When the disciples saw this, they were frightened and they woke Jesus up. Jesus rebuked the storm and it dies down. It is important that we trust in God in everything we ask for. If you trust in God, God will always give you what you ask for in prayer provided that you ask in accordance to his will.

In Luke 8:26-39, Jesus arrived at Gerasenes, which is the other side of the Lake of Galilee. When Jesus asked the evil spirit his name, he answered legion. The evil spirit has taken hold of the man so that he control his behavior. The evil spirits begged Jesus not to send them to the abyss. There was a herd of pigs feeding nearby and Jesus commanded them to get out of the man. There were about 2,000 pigs feeding nearby (Mark 5:13). The evil spirits entered into the pigs. The pigs suddenly lost control of themselves. They rushed down into the river and were drowned. The man wanted to follow Jesus but Jesus would not allow him. He asked him to go home and tell this testimony to others. Christians should use their authorities to rebuke the evil spirits in the name of Jesus. When you rebuke the evil spirits in the name of Jesus, you must have faith so that they will come out. If Jesus had healed you, you must give testimony so that others can come to faith in Christ through your testimony.

In Luke 8:40-56, the daughter of synagogue ruler named Jairus was ill and he came to ask Jesus to heal her. As Jesus was coming to the house of Jairus, a woman who had suffered from bleeding for 12 years came up to touch the edge of the cloak of Jesus and was healed. The woman thought to herself that if she just touch the edge of Jesus’ cloak, she would have been healed. Because of her faith, she was healed from her bleeding illness. Jesus knew someone touched him and power has gone out from him. The woman admitted touching Jesus. Jesus told her that her faith has healed her. There is nothing impossible when you have faith in God. When Jesus was still speaking, someone informed Jairus that his daughter is dead. Jesus told Jairus not to be afraid but trust in God and she will be healed. Jesus got rid of everyone from the house except his three disciples including Peter, James and John, and the mother and father of the child. The crowd laughed at Jesus but Jesus took the girl by the hand and commanded her to get up. Immediately, the girl was raised from the dead.
