Matthew 12 Bible Study

In Matthew 12:1-8, the Pharisees rebuked Jesus’ disciples because they pluck the grain on the Sabbath day. Jesus rebuked them back by saying he is the Lord of the Sabbath. In the law of Moses, it is forbidden to carry any load on the Sabbath. Christians should dedicate the Sabbath day completely to God. On this day, you cannot carry out any entertainment activity such as play games, dining out, shopping and etc. You must go to the church on the Sabbath day. You should not carry out any selling activity on the Sabbath day. Churches should not sell on the Sabbath day.

In Matthew 12:9-14, Jesus healed a person with crippled hand on the Sabbath day and the Pharisees criticize him. On the Sabbath day, we can do good. We must do the work of God on the Sabbath day. The Pharisees were jealous and they made plans to kill Jesus.

In Matthew 12:15-21, when Jesus knew that the Pharisees is plotting to kill him, he left the place. This fulfills the prophecy in Isaiah 42:1-4. Jesus proceeded to heal the sick. He warned the people not to tell anyone about him.

In Matthew 12:22-32, when the people saw Jesus casting out demons, they accuse him of casting out the demons by the power of Beelzebul. When Jesus knew this, he points out that if he is casting out demons by the power of Beelzebul, he would be tearing down his own kingdom. Jesus said that any sin committed against the son will be forgiven but blaspheming against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

In Matthew 12:33-37, you can judge whether a person is good or bad by his deeds. Jesus said that it is what comes forth of the heart that causes a person to become defiled. Everyone will have to be held accountable to everything they said on the judgment day.

In Matthew 12:38-42, when the Pharisees and teachers of the law asks for a sign, Jesus said that no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah in the stomach of the fish for 3 days and nights. Jesus is predicting about his death. Jesus died but he rose from the dead on the third day. After Jesus died, he descend into the Hades and freed the captives and brought them to heaven. Jesus was in the Hades for 3 days before God raised him up from the dead. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and teaches of the law because they rejected him. Jesus said that because they rejected his teachings, they will be condemned on the judgment day.

In Matthew 12:43-45, once the demons is cast out of a person, the person must fill his mind with the word of God and stop sinning so that the demon has no foothold in his life. We must not give any foothold to the demon otherwise he can attack you.

In Matthew 12:46-50, Jesus said that anyone who do God’s will is called his mother or brother or sister.
