Daniel 1 Summary
King Nebuchadnezzar decided to conquer Jehoiakim after he rebelled against him. After King Nebuchadnezzar successfully conquered King Jehoiakim, he went into the temple of God to steal the precious articles. The articles were put in the temple of his Babylonian god. Some of the Israelites from the royal family were brought into Babylonia to serve the king. The four young men taken from the royal family are Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. They were given Babylonian names. Daniel is called Belteshazzar; Hananiah is called Shadrach; Mishael is called Meshach; and Azariah is called Abednego.
Daniel and his friends are Jewish so they decided not to eat the royal food served by the chief official. The royal food consists of meat and wines. To avoid defiling himself, Daniel asked the king official to assign them vegetables and water for the daily meals. The king official was afraid of losing his life because he is not sure that Daniel and his friends will look healthy after eating the vegetarian meal. However, Daniel calmed down the king official by assuring that he will look healthier than the rest of the men at the end of 10 days period.
Indeed, after 10 days, Daniel and his friend look healthier than the young men who chose to eat the royal food. When King Nebuchadnezzar interviewed the four young men, he found that they are cleverer by 10 times than the magicians in his kingdom.
Daniel 1 Bible Study
1. Daniel is faithful
Daniel has a godly character. Even when he was a prisoner at Babylonia, he was still faithful to God. Instead of following the local tradition, he decided to hold fast to God. He did not eat the meat and wine presented by the king’s officials in order to survive. To Daniel, obedience to God is the most important thing. Daniel has a lot of courage to tell the official that he doesn’t want to be fed with the same kind of food as the rest of others. He asked the official to test him and his three friends by serving just vegetables and plain water for 10 days. Because Daniel is faithful to God, God granted him favor by making the officials amicable to him.
2. Daniel has strong courage
Daniel’s strong courage provides inspiration for his three friends including Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael. After they completed their training, God blessed them by making them 10 times cleverer than other officials in the kingdom. The extraordinary character of Daniel and his three friends cause their names to be repeated throughout the book several times.
3. Importance of knowing how to follow Jesus
It is important that a Christian knows how to follow God if he or she wants to be victorious. Many Christians just labeled themselves as Christians but they don’t really follow God. For example, there are Christians who feel that going to church is not necessary to be saved so they don’t go to church every Sunday. To be a faithful Christian, you must read the bible and understand it. You can spend some time to read and study the bible. Lots of Christians will take some excuses to give themselves reason not to go to church on Sunday and stay at home. In order to be saved, you must not only confess and believe that Jesus die on the cross for you sins; but you must also carry your cross and follow God daily.
