Daniel 3 Summary

King Nebuchadnezzar set up a gold image that measures about 60 cubits wide and 60 cubit high. The gold image was set up on a plain called Dura. After the gold image was set up, King Nebuchadnezzar assembled all his officials at the dedication ceremony. King Nebuchadnezzar commanded everyone in his kingdom to bow down and worship the gold image with all kinds of music instruments. He threatened that those who did not bow down to the image will be put into the fire. It happened that Daniel’s friends did not bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar and someone told the king about it.

The king was angry that Daniel’s friends did not obey him and ask them whether the accusation is true. Daniel’s friends in turn replied they had nothing to hide from him. They told the king that God will deliver them even if he throw him into the fire. King Nebuchadnezzar ordered that the fire be heated 7 times hotter. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were bounded with rope before the soldiers put them in the furnace. The fire was so hot that the soldiers who brought them into the furnace died. Suddenly. King Nebuchadnezzar saw a fourth man walking around in the fire and untying the rope of the three man. King Nebuchadnezzar claimed that the fourth man looks like the son of gods.

Later, he commanded Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego to come out of the furnace. There is no sign that they are burned by the fire. Not a single hair of Daniel’s friends was harmed. The robes they wear were not burned by the fire as well. Because of this, King Nebuchadnezzar praise God. He decreed that anyone who condemn God will be cut into pieces and his house converted into rubbles. King Nebuchadnezzar promotes the rankings of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Babylonian province.

Daniel 3 Bible Study

1. Never interpret God’s words in your favor

In Daniel 3, King Nebuchadnezzar set up a gold image. The gold image that he set up seems to be inspired by earlier dream he had. Daniel predicted that the Babylonian empire will be conquered by another kingdom so Nebuchadnezzar set up the gold image. In the previous dream, only the head of the statue is made of gold. The gold image, which Nebuchadnezzar had set up is fully made of pure gold. It is possible that the king set up the gold image because he does not want the Babylonian kingdom to come to an end.

God gave the dream to Nebuchadnezzar because he wanted him to know that Jesus is the ultimate king. Nebuchadnezzar is depicted as the head of gold in the statue. However, the dream also show that the rock, which represents Jesus, will eventually overcome all the man made governments on earth. Nebuchadnezzar only hear what he wanted to hear. Instead of humbling himself, he reacted quickly to build a gold image to exalt himself. This example can be applied to use. Like Nebuchadnezzar, some Christians prefer to view things in their own standpoints. For example, you may falsely interpret a scripture when you view things with yourself in the center. (Colossians 1:16-18) If God gives you a prophetic dream, you should not try to interpret it and work it out on your own favor. You should pray to God and reference the Bible so that God can show you what it means.

2. Nebuchadnezzar is proud

Nebuchadnezzar is egoistic and proud. He does not just want to be the golden head statue. He made himself a compltely gold statue that is 90 feet wide and 90 feet high. It is very important that you humble yourself before God because only the humble can see God. Daniel’s friends chose not to bow down to other God because they are faithful to God. Rather than obeying Nebuchadnezzar commands, they are willing to die. It is tempting to worship the creatures and not the creator. It is easy for people to be proud and not want to humble themselves before God. Nebuchadnezzar wanted to be God but he later suffered from a minor mental illness and behaved like a wild being. It is better to die than to lose your conscience to God. Daniel’s friends put God ine first position so God sent his angle to save them from the fiery furnace. There are lots of deceptions and temptations in this world. If you don’t put God in the first place, you will easily be led astray into the world. Therefore, you must always humble yourself in God.
