Exodus 13 Summary

God commanded Moses to instruct the Israelites to consecrate every firstborn male to him. After that, Moses instructed the Israelites to observe the Passover for 7 days, during which they are to eat unleavened bread and no yeast is o be found among them. After they entered into Canaan, they are to dedicate the first offspring of every womb and firstborn males of every flock.

The firstborn donkey should be redeemed with a lamb. They are to redeem the firstborn sons. In the future, when their sons ask why they sacrifice the firstborn sons, they should tell them the story of the Passover, how God brought the Israelites out of Egypt. When Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, God killed every firstborn of the Egyptians and livestock. This is why they sacrifice the first offspring of every womb and redeem their firstborn sons.

God led the Israelites through the route of the desert road toward the Red Sea and not through the route of the Philistine country because he thought if the Israelites face war, they may decide to go back to Egypt. Moses brought Joseph’s bones with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swore to bring his bones with them when they leave Egypt. God guided the Israelites with a pillar of cloud in the morning and a pillar of fire at night. The pillar of cloud or pillar of fire did not leave them at all and it remained in front of the people all the time.

Exodus 13 Bible Study

1. Give your first fruit to God

God wanted the Israelites to dedicate to him the firstborn of every womb and livestock. Similarly, we should dedicate the first fruit of our income, which is the whole portion of the income you receive on the first month to God. By giving your first fruit to God, God will bless you. In Proverbs 3:9, we are to honor the Lord with the first fruits of all our wealth. We should also give our tithes, which is 10% of our income to God (Malachi 3:10). The tithe should be given to the church because it is the house of God, not to c charity organization.

2. Let God be in charge of your life

God guided the Israelites with a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire during the night. In Proverbs 3:5-6, we should acknowledge God in all our ways and lean not in our own understanding so that God can lead us on a straight path. We should surrender completely to God and let him take charge of our lives and guide us. If you completely surrender and obey God, you will walk on the path of righteousness. In Jeremiah 29:11, God has a wonderful plan for each of us, plan to prosper us and not to harm us. In Psalm 119:105, God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths.
