Exodus 26 Summary
Exodus 26 contains a detailed plan of the tabernacle. The tabernacle is to be made up of 10 curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn. Cherubims should be worked throughout the curtains. Each of the 10 curtain is to be measured 28 cubits in length and 4 cubits in width. They are to be of the same size. Every five curtains should be joined together so that there are 2 sets of five curtains. Fifty loops are to be fastened on each end of every set of the curtain. The loops must face each other opposite. Fifty gold taches are to be used to fasten the curtains together.
The tabernacle is to be surrounded by a tent that is made up of 11 goat hair curtains. Each of the 11 curtains must have the same size. The 11 curtains are to be 30 cubits long and 4 cubits wide. There should be 2 sets of goat hair curtains. One set should have 5 curtains while the other should have 6 curtains. The 6th curtain should be folded double in front of the tent. Fifty loops should be fastened on the end of each curtain set. The additional length of the tent curtain is to be hanged down on the rear of the tabernacle. The goat hair tent curtain will longer by a cubit so that it will hang over the tabernacle sides and cover it.
Upright boards that are made of shittim wood should be made for the tabernacle. Every board is to be 10 cubits long and 1.5 cubits wide. 20 boards with 40 silver sockets are to be assigned on the north and south sides. 6 boards are to be assigned to the west and 2 boards are to be assigned to the corners at the far end. The two corners must be double from the bottom to the top and fitted into a single ring so that there are 8 boards and 16 silver sockets. Two sockets will be under each board.
Two sets of shittim wood bars are to be made for on one side of the tabernacle, the other side, the frames on the west, and at the far end of the tabernacle. Each set will have 5 bars. The center bar is to extend end to end from the middle of the frame. The frames are to be overlay with gold. Gold rings are to be made to support the cross bars. The crossbars are to be overlay with gold.
God commanded Moses to build the tabernacle according to the plan he showed him on the mountain.
A veil of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen is to be made. The curtain is to be hung with gold hooks on four shittim wood posts. The shittim wood posts are to be overlaid with gold and stand on 4 silver bases. This curtain will be used to separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. The atonement cover is to be placed over the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy Place. The table should be placed on the north side of the tabernacle.
A curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen is to be made for the entrance to the tent. There should be 5 posts made from shittim wood. The shittim wood should be overlay with gold. There should be 5 bronze bases for them.
Exodus 26 Bible Study
1. The church as one body in Christ
Just as all the curtains are joined together to construct a tabernacle so is the body of Christ. Each of us is a member of Christ’s body and have an important role to play in the church. Different Christian denominations should be united so that the kingdom of God can be furthered. We must not fight because of different denominations. In Philippians 2:12, we should be of the same mind, have the same love, be in full accord and of one mind. In 1 Peter 3:8, we should have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart and a humble mind. In Colossians 3:14, above all put on love which binds everything in perfect harmony.
2. Preach the gospel and further God’s kingdom
The tabernacle is a long and narrow tent but God’s church on earth is to be bigger than that. Every Christian has the responsibility to preach the gospel. You should spread the good news of the gospel to the people around you. In 1 Corinthians 9:16, Paul said woe to him if he don’t preach the gospel. In Mark 16:15, Jesus commanded his disciples to go into all the world to preach the good news to all creations.
