Leviticus 19 Bible Study
1. Respect your father and mother
In Leviticus 19:3, we must respect our father and mother. You must respect your parent’s decision by listening to them. If what they tell you to do is against God’s commandments, you should not do it (Proverbs 1:8-9; Proverbs 15:5; Proverbs 20:20; Exodus 21:15, 17; Ephesians 6:1; Colossians 3:20).
2. Observe the Sabbath
In Leviticus 19:3, we must observe the Sabbath. Although the observation of Sabbath is an Old Testament law, Christians still have to observe it. On the Sabbath day, you cannot buy or sell or hire someone to look after your business (Nehemiah 10:31; Deuteronomy 5:14; Jeremiah 17:19-27).
3. Don’t cheat
In Leviticus 19:11, we should not steal, lie or cheat one another. Cheating in anyway regardless of for good or bad intention is a sin. In Leviticus 19:13, it is a sin to cheat your neighbor or rob him or hold back the wages of your workers. If you hire workers, make sure you always pay their salary on time. Delaying or not making payment for your workers’ salary is stealing from your work. But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. In Revelation 21:8, but the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. In 1 Corinthians 6:8, nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
4. Don’t swear by God’s name
In Leviticus 19:12, swearing by God’s name is a sin because you cannot be sure whether what you swear will come true. No one knows what is going to happen in the future. You can promise but you should not swear. In James 5:12, but above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
5. Don’t show favoritism
In Leviticus 19:15, don’t show favoritism to the poor or great. Showing favoritism whether for good or bad intentions are sins against God. We must be fair to everyone in every circumstance. In James 2:9, but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
6. Don’t spread slander
In Leviticus 19:16, don’t spread slander among people. Slander means gossiping about someone without having verifying whether the report is true or not. Slandering and gossiping are things that idle people do. We should use our mouths to say things that edify others and give glory to God. In James 4:11-12, speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
7. Don’t eat blood
In Leviticus 19:26, don’t eat any thing with blood in it. Eating blood is a sin. We should abstain from eating raw blood or dishes that made from blood. In Acts 15:20, but that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
8. Don’t practice witchcraft
In Leviticus 19:26, don’t practice any kind of witchcraft. All kinds of witchcrafts are forbidden by God including necromancy, voodoo, divination, charms, fortune telling, palm reading, astrology, and etc. Things that contains symbols of witchcrafts should not be worn or kept in your house. In Galatians 5:19-21, now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
9. Don’t tattoo yourself
In Leviticus 19:28, cutting and tattooing yourself is a sin. Tatttoing yourself whether for godly or secular reasons are sins for God. Some people claim that tattooing a cross on themselves is okay but God forbids tattooing so we must not tattoo ourselves. Cutting yourself is also a sin. Surgery for medical reasons is not a sin but using knife to cut yourself is a sin.
10. Respect the elders
In Leviticus 19:32, we must respect the elders. In 1 Timothy 5:17, let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. In 1 Timothy 5:1, rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren.
