The Levites were responsible for carrying out their duties at the tent of the congregation but they cannot go near the furnishings of the Most Holy Place or altar otherwise Aaron and them will die. God give Aaron and his descendants the priesthood as a gift.
The holy offerings of the Israelites, whatever set aside from the gifts of the heave offerings, firstfruits of the harvest including the finest olive oil, finest new wine and grain, the firstborns of the ox, sheep and goat and the tithes from the Israelites belonged to the Levites.
Every firstborn including man and animal belonged to God. Every firstborn son and firstborn male of unclean animal that is 1 month old should be redeemed for 5 shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.
The Levites were not exempted from paying tithes. The Levites were to present the 1/10 of the best part of the tithes they received from the Israelites to Aaron so that they won’t bear any guilt and die.
Numbers 18 Bible Study
1. Headship and accountability
Aaron and his sons were held accountable for any offense committed against the priesthood and sanctuary. Leaders in the church will be more accountable to God because it is their job. In Luke 12:48, but he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
2. Give your tithes and offerings with a cheerful heart
The Levites have to give their tithes just like the Israelites. The Israelites were required to give their tithes and firstfruits. Giving the firstborns and firstfruits is risky because the land may not produce much more crops and the animal may not give birth again. But God promised to bless the Israelites if they offered their firstfruits. It is necessary for every Christian to pay his tithe. The tithe is 10% of your income. We must give our tithes and offerings to the King of kings and Lord of lords with a cheerful heart. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. In 2 Corinthians 8:12, for if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. In Deuteronomy 15:10, thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
