Numbers 20 Summary

On the 1st month, Miriam, the sister of Aaron and Moses died and was buried after the Israelites arrived at the Desert of Zin. Later, the Israelites complained to Moses about having no water to drink. Moses and Aaron fell facedown and God’s glory appeared. God commanded Moses and Aaron to gather his assembly and speak to the rock to bring forth water.

Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly. Moses used his staff to strike the rock two times and the water gushed out from it. God was angry with Moses because he did not trust in him enough to honor him as holy before the Israelites so Moses won’t lead the people into the land of Canaan. The river was named Meribah because it was at that place that the Israelites quarreled with the Lord and he was sanctified among them.

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to ask for the permission to pass through the territory of Edom. The Israelites promised to travel on the king’s highway until they have passed through the Edomites territory. Edom refused to let the Israelites pass through.

Edom replied that they will march out and attack the Israelites with the sword if they try to pass through. The Israelites replied that they will only go on the main road and not turn to the left or right and if they drink any of their water, they will pay for it. But Edom still refused to let them pass through. Later, Edom sent a large and powerful army to fight the Israelites and the Israelites did not pass through their territory.

The Israelite community traveled from Kadesh to Mount Hor. At Mount Hor, God commanded Moses to bring Aaron and Eleazar up Mount Hor and put Aaron’s garment on Eleazar. Moses did as God had commanded and brought Aaron and Eleazar up Mount Hor. Moses put Aaron’s garment on Eleazar while on Mount Hor. After that, Aaron died. The Israelites knew that Aaron had died when Moses and Eleazar descended the mountain. The Israelites mourned for Aaron 30 days.

1. Don’t grumble

The Israelites grumble against Moses and Aaron for no water to drink. We must not grumble or murmur or complain no matter how difficult it is to handle a task or situation (Philippians 2:14; 1 Peter 4:9; 1 Corinthians 10:10; Jude 1:16).

2. Trust in God

Moses did not trust in God. God said speak to the rock but he strike the rock twice. He said, ‘must we fetch you water out of this rock?’, which make it doubtful if he is going to bring water out from the rock. We must have complete trust in God and never question about what he says (Romans 8:28; Proverbs 3:5; Romans 15:13).
