Bible Study Outline on First Works

What Does First Works Mean?

First works refers to the first love, which involves loving God with all your heart, soul and mind. Jesus said the most important commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind. To love God is to put him in the first place in your life. If you put God in the first place in your life, you will always think about your actions, whether what you are doing is in accordance with God’s commandments.

In 1 John 5:3-4, this is love for God, to obey his commandments. God’s commandments are not burdensome because everyone who is born of God has already overcomes the world. The Holy Spirit who lives in you can help you to overcome your fleshly desire if you fully surrender your life to God and make your mind to walk in his commandments. In John 14:15, if you love God, you do what he command. In John 14:21, whoever that obey God’s commands is the one who loves God. He who loves Jesus will be loved by the Father God and Jesus will love him too and show himself to him. In John 14:23, Jesus said anyone who loves him will obey his teaching. The Father God will love him and they will come to him and make their homes with him.

In 1 John 2:3, we know that we have come to know God if we walk in his commandments. In 2 John 1:6, and this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, that you should walk in the commandment as you have heard from the beginning.

Repent and Start Living a Holy Life for God

In Revelation 2:4-5, Jesus tell the church in Ephesus that they had abandoned their first lobe and now they must repent and do the first works otherwise he will come and remove their lampstand from the place. If you are a Christian but you have not been walking in God’s commandments, you must repent and confess your sins. The commandments of God are written in the Bible.

If you want to know the commandment of God, you must read the Bible. If you don’t understand the Bible, you can read the commentaries. Free commentaries can be found on the online bible websites. If you don’t know whether what you do is a violation of God’s commandment, you can ask your pastor or do research online. If you do research on your own online, you must be careful because different people write with different Christian beliefs. You must make sure that you are reading information from the website that teach the right doctrine.

In Ephesians 2:8-9, we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. This is not our own doing but the gift of God so that no one may boast. Salvation by grace means now anyone who believe Jesus Christ is risen from the third day and confess he is Lord is qualify for receiving the gift of eternal life. However, this does not mean that you can sin all you want and still get saved.

All sinners will have their parts in Hell no matter if they believe in Jesus or not. In Revelation 21:8, but the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burn with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. In Colossians 3:5, idolatry does not just means the worshiping of idols but it also refer to whatever that belong to your earthly nature including fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness.

What qualify you for eternal life is carrying your cross to follow Jesus and walk in his commandments faithfully. If you are faithful in following Jesus while on earth, you can receive eternal life. In John 12:50, God’s commandments lead to eternal life. Whatever Jesus said is what the Father told him to say. In John 6:68, Jesus has the words of eternal life. In Revelation 3:5, the one who conquers the tribulations on earth will wear white garments and Jesus will never blot his name out of the Book of Life.

If you need help in overcoming your sin, you can ask the Holy Spirit to help you. The Holy Spirit is our helper and he will guide you to overcome your difficulty (John 14:26).

Baptism and the First Works

In Acts 8:12-13, the people believed in the gospel Philip preached and they were baptized. In Acts 2:38, Peter said repent and be baptized unto the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and they shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is the seal that you will receive the gift of eternal life (Ephesians 1:13). The Holy Spirit acts like a witness in you (Romans 8:16). When you do something wrong, the Holy Spirit will tell you so that you can repent. You must not ignore the Holy Spirit otherwise you will grieve him. Therefore, the first works are repentance and baptism. If you have backslided before, you can get baptized once more to show that you are now really born of God.
