Bible Study Outline on Generosity

All of God’s commandments are summed up in loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind and loving others as much as you love yourself. If you love others, you will be willing to share your possessions and give to those who are needy. Many Christians are selfish and stingy. They think that having faith in Jesus is all they need to go to heaven. However, only those who obey God and walk in his commandments can inherit eternal life and go to heaven. If you have faith, you must also have deeds. This means that if you say you are a believer of God, you must also display the love of Christ in your life by showing love and kindness to others.

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (James 2:14-17 KJV)

Be Generous in Giving Tithe and Offerings

Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 3:9-12 KJV)

Christians must be generous in giving to God. Giving tithe, 10% of your income, is necessary as this is a commandment of God. Many Christians argue that there is no need to give tithe anymore as this is a commandment from the Old Testament. In the New Testament, anyone can inherit eternal life and go to heaven if they have faith in Jesus and walk in his commandments. On the other hand, the Old Testament emphasizes the observance of various kinds of ceremonial laws, festivities and other commandments that are passed down by Moses.  Christians don’t have to observe the ceremonial laws and festivities anymore. However, Christians still have to obey the moral laws in the Old Testament such as the Ten Commandment, the giving of tithe and etc.

Giving tithe is an act of worshiping God. It belongs to God so giving your tithe means you worship and respect God. Whether or not your church is rich, you should give tithe because this is a requirement of God. You are not giving just to help the church to meet its expenses but God requires you to give your tithe.

Offering is any donation you give to the church or other ministries. When you give your tithe and offering, you must give cheerfully with a generous heart. God does not look at how much you give. Even if your tithe is a small amount, it will be accepted as long as you give it with a cheerful and willing heart. In 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 KJV, but this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Be Generous in Giving to the Poor

When you see someone poor and needy, you should do your best to use your possessions to meet his needs such as food, clothes and etc. If you have a poor relative, you should care for him or her instead of passing the responsibility to the church or other charity homes. If a needy person ask you to borrow him some food or money, you should lend him without pressing on him when he should repay you. If you often give cheerfully and generously, God will bless you and keep you so that you have all you need and abundantly. In this way, you will be able to bless others too.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27 KJV)

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. (Matthew 5:42 KJV)

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well.  (James 2:8 KJV)

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. (Luke 12:33 KJV

Let brotherly love continue. (Hebrews 13:1 KJV)

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. (Luke 6:38 KJV)

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5 KJV)

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. (Proverbs 11:25 KJV)
