Bible Study Outline on Idols of the Heart

Idols of the heart refers to the things you put first in your heart over God. There are many things that we can put first in our lives including materialism, celebrity and etc. Coveting something badly is also a form of idol of the heart. Discontentment is idolatry. We must eliminate everything that destroy our contentment with God. We are to devote our heart 100% to God.

Pride is one of the biggest idols in men’s hearts. God does not like proud people. People who are proud will choose to rely on their own strength rather than relying on God. Many Christians who believe in God sometimes choose to believe in their own abilities rather than trusting in God. Pride can be exhibited in your attitude, character and disobedience. A person who is proud does not like God’s discipline.

Lust is another idol of men’s heart. Lust happen in your heart and thoughts. Jesus Christ said that a man is considered as committing adultery when he look at a woman with lust in his heart. Our body is a gift of God. The Holy Spirit lives in us. We are to use our body in a way that glorify him. We should not use our body to entice others into sinful lusts.

Physical idols is the worshiping of idols made by men. We cannot follow Christ and worship idols at the same time. You should get rid of every idol in your life. Anything that portray idolatry should be thrown way for example, photo of temples, t-shirt with idolatry images, idolatry ornaments, and etc. Obsession with a celebrity by sticking posters all over your bedroom is also idolatry. Books can become a form of idolatry too. Some people like to read comic book so much that they spend the whole day reading it. You should not read comic book as it does not help you to have a closer relationship with God. Everyday, you should read your bible.

Placing your own needs in priority over what God is idolatry. You must be willing to obey God’s commandments rather than fulfilling your needs. You should never allow your desires or plan to get in the way of what God is calling you to do.

Too much entertainment can rob our time for God. If you want to watch movies, you should watch movies that teach you about the bible. Many Christians are willing to spend money to buy entertainment such as DVD, movie tickets, dining out at restaurant. However, they are stingy towards contributing in church’s tithe and offering. When you put entertainment in priority over God, it will become an idol of the heart.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5 KJV)

And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. (Isaiah 37:19 KJV)

The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. (Psalm 135:15-17 KJV)

Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. (Isaiah 30:22 KJV)

What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? (Habakkuk 2:18 KJV)

They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. (Jonah 2:8 KJV)

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (Colossians 2:8 KJV)

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (Romans 1:21-23 KJV)

They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing? Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together. (Isaiah 44:9-11 KJV)

They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand? (Isaiah 44:18-20 KJV)

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:3-6 KJV)

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (Colossians 3:5 KJV)
