Bible Study Outline on Jewelry, Make Up, and Hair Dyeing
Many Christians Think It is Okay to Be a Little Vain
Nowadays, there are many Christians that decorate themselves with jewelry, make up and dyeing their hair. Many Christians think it is not a sin to be vain and decorate themselves in various ways to improve their appearance. Pastors of mega churches usually will wear jewelry, make up and dye their hair to make themselves look more presentable to the people in the congregation.
Modern churches are influenced by the fashion trends in the world. Many churches felt that it is all right to conform to the world a little bit to attract more people into their churches (Romans 12:2). Some Christians claim that wearing jewelry, using make up and dyeing the hair are all right as long as they are doing for the right motives.
However, when God judge us, he judge both our actions and motives. For example, if you have a bad motive yet you do something good, you are still considered sinning. If you have good motive but your action is against God’s commandment, it is still a sin. In 1 Corinthians 4:5, therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
We Are Beautiful in God’s Eyes
God is the creator of this universe. He created the earth and everything in it. He created each one of us when we are in our mothers’ wombs (Psalm 139:13; Jeremiah 1:5; 1 Corinthians 8:6). We are created to be beautiful in our own ways so we should not try to change our appearances. As God’s creation, we must respect God and not try to change ourselves since he created us to be the way how we look. Even if you are born with a slight defect such as crooked mouth, large ears and etc, you should not undergo cosmetic surgery although doing so will improve your appearance. Therefore, it is a sin to decorate yourself with jewelry, make up and hair dyeing.
You can wear cross necklace to profess your faith as a Christian to others. The cross necklace that you wear should be just a plain cross and not be adorned with precious stones or contain other symbols. You should avoid wearing other types of Christian jewelries. It is a fashion trend to wear Christian jewelries. Non believers also wear Christian jewelries because they are following the fashion trend. Christians must set themselves apart from the world and not behave like how the worldly people behave. Real Christians are simple and not needy. They are humble and always live their lives modestly.
Wearing Jewelry, Make Up and Hair Dyeing are Vanity
Wearing jewelry, make up and dyeing your hair show that you are vain. Even wearing a simple jewelry is considered vanity and a sin. God takes into account every sin no matter big or small sins. Many Christians think that God does not see their small sins. We must be careful to observe God’s commandment and make sure we don’t break them in any way. Christian should just dress in neat and modest clothes. When you look into the mirror, you should just see to make sure you are neat. You should not look at yourself too long in the mirror and adore yourself because this is vanity. It is also a sin to dye your hair back to the normal color if it has turn grey or white. God gives grey or white hair to old people and you should not try to change what God has made natural.
In Ecclesiastes 2:8, vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. In 1 Timothy 2:9-10, in like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. In 1 Peter 3:5, for after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands.
Surrender Yourself to God
Christians must surrender themselves completely to God and let the Holy Spirit guide them. Christians must forsake their old selves, the old ways they used to live their lives, the worldliness in them and gratification of the fleshly desires and put on the new selves. The new self is the image and likeliness of Christ. Jesus Christ has made himself a good role model when he was on earth. While he was on earth, he lead a simple life. Jesus Christ was born in a poor family.
In Colossians 3:9, lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. In Titus 3:5, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. In 1 Peter 1:14, as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance. In 1 John 2:15, love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
If you have been vain and like to adorn yourself with jewelry, make up and dyeing your hair, you should confess your sins to God. In 1 John 1:8-9, If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In James 2:10, for whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
