Bible Study Outline on Overcoming Temptation

temptation

Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil because of curiosity. Both Adam and Eve experienced the consequences of disobeying God as a result of eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Young people abuse drugs and become addicted to them because they are curious to experience them. If you don’t want to be overcomed by temptation, you must have self control and not be curious. Curiosity causes us to become disobedient and break God’s commandments. The consequence of disobedient is slavery to sin and the wages of sin is death.

Joseph was seducted by the wife of Potiphar but he did not gave into temptation. This shows that he is discipline and have self control.

David sinned against God by lusting over Bathsheba when he saw her bathing underneath naked. Afterwards, David went to bed with Bathsheba. This led to God’s punishment on his household. The firstborn he had with Bathsheba died. God also punish David’s household with disasters including sibling rivalries and betrayal of his son to the throne. If David did not succumbed to temptation, he would be able to avoid these disasters.

Judas had a weakness in money. He was the one in charge of the treasury. He was bribed by the high priests to betray his master Jesus Christ by letting them know his wherebout. He led the Roman soldiers to capture and arrest Jesus Christ which led to his crucifixion and death.

Jesus also experienced temptations during his lifetime on earth. He was tempted in every respect but he did not sin at all. This is why he is able to become a blameless sacrifice of sin offering for the sins of the people around the world (Hebrews 4:15).

We are to imitate Christ and be discipline so that we will not be tempted to sin . We must overcome sin by abiding in the Spirit and the commandments of God.

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV)

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41 KJV)

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. (James 1:12-16 KJV)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 KJV)

For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. (Hebrews 2:18 KJV)

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11 KJV)

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. (Matthew 4:1-11 KJV)

Neither give place to the devil. (Ephesians 4:27 KJV)

Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. (Mark 14:38 KJV)

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (James 1:2-4 KJV)

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (James 1:2-4 KJV)

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (Romans 5:3-5 KJV)
