Bible Study Outline on Secular Music

What is Secular Music?

Secular music is music performed my secular artists such as Rihanna, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson and etc. There are also secular Christian music performed by hip hop artist. Nowadays, many churches are trying to use secular music and secular Christian music to attract more people to their churches and win more souls. This is wrong because it does not comply with the Bible. Romans 12:1-2 states that we should present our body as a living sacrifice to God. We should not conform to the worldly pattern anymore but be transformed through the renewing of our mind so that we can test and approve God’s will. God’s will is good, pleasing and perfect.

Why Christians should not listen to Secular Music?

Some Christians claim that listening to secular music is all right as long as you believe in God. But this is a wrong thinking because many song lyrics are imparting negative messages such as murder, violence, sex, rape, and hatred. People who listen to these songs will get influenced by them. Secular Christian rock music is also wrong. In Philippians 4:8, Paul exhort the Philippians to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of virtue and of things that give praise to God.

Even though the lyric of secular Christian rock music is about worshiping God, it is imitating after the rock music and has high pitch sound and loud music. Many Christian rock music artists dress and behave much like the secular Christian music artists. They always give excuses that using secular music can drive people to convert to Christianity but it spreads a worldly atmosphere. In Ecclesiastes 7:5, it is better for a man to rebuke than to hear the song of fools. In 1 Corinthians 10:31, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do should be doing it for glorifying God’s name.

As Christians, we must be set apart from the world. If the people of the world see you are as worldly as them, they will not be able to see the testimony of Jesus in you. It is important that our lives serve as a living testimony for Jesus so that it makes people want Jesus. In 2 Corinthians 6:17, God commands his people to go out from their midst, and be separate from them and touch no unclean thing. In 1 Peter 2:12, we should have a good living testimony so that when the pagan see us, they cannot find any fault to insult your faith but that they may see your good deeds and give glorify to God. In 1 Peter 3:15, we must keep a clear conscience so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior will be ashamed. In 1 Peter 2:15, by doing good, you will silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.

Instead of listening to contemporary Christian rock music, we should listen to psalms or hymns. Psalms are the songs composed from the psalms written in the book of Psalm in the bible. Hymns are poetic songs found in the hymn books. Spiritual songs are songs sung through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. If you want to sing spiritual song, you can pray to the Holy Spirit for it.

In Ephesians 5:19, we should address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. In Colossians 3:16, we should sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in our hearts to God. In 1 Corinthians 14:26, when you come together, each one with a hymn, revelation, tongue or interpretation should do so to edify and build up the church. In James 5:13, anyone that is suffering should pray. Anyone that is cheerful should sing praise to God.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit so we should use it to honor God. We can use all kinds of music instruments to praise God (Psalm 150:3-5). However, we should avoid using loud music played by electric guitar or worldly sound and etc to worship God. If you have listened to secular music in the past, you should ask God to forgive you and cleanse away your sin.
