Bible Study Outline on Spiritual Gifts

What are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are gifts bestowed on the believers by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit gives each of us spiritual gifts so that we can use them to edify others in the faith and further the kingdom of God. Every believer has at least one spiritual gift (1 Corinthians 12:7). You can discover the spiritual gifts by praying to the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, there are many different types of spiritual gifts but they are all bestowed by the same spirit, the Holy Spirit. The same God works all of them in all the believers.

The 9 Spiritual Gifts

There are 9 spiritual gifts including word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, divers kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

Word of Wisdom

The word of wisdom is the word that the Holy Spirit put in your mouth to say. For example, in Matthew 22:15-22, the Pharisees test Jesus by sending their disciples to ask whether it is right to pay tax to Caesar. When Jesus heard their question, he requested for a piece of denarius. They shaw him a denarius and he asked whose inscription is on it. They replied Caesar. Jesus then replied give to Caesar what belong to Caesar and give to God what belong to God. In Luke 21:15, Jesus said he will give the disciples a mouth and wisdom so that all their adversaries will not be able to gainsay not resist. In Isaiah 51:16, God will put his words in your mouth and cover you with the shadow of his hand, God who set the foundations of the earth and say unto Zion they are his people.

Word of Knowledge

The word of knowledge is the foreknowledge of something, known through the revelation of the Holy Spirit to you. The Holy Spirit can reveal to you something that has happened or something that will happen in the future. For example, Elisha told his servant, Gehazi, he knew about him taking gifts from the Syrian general, Naaman, when Gehazi tried to act as if nothing has happened. In 1 Kings 20:22, the prophet came to King Ahab and told him to strengthen his position because Ben Hadad will come to attack him again. In 1 Kings 20:26, indeed, the next spring, Ben Hadad mustered the Arameans to attack Ahab at Aphek. The word of knowledge enables you to minister to the people’s needs more efficently. For example, when you are praying for someone, the Holy Spirit can reveal to you what kind of problem the person is facing so you can for him pray about that.

Faith is the ability to trust in God. Faith is necessary for God to answer a prayer. God is pleased with those who have faith in him (Hebrews 11:6). In Luke 9:37-43, the disciples couldn’t cast out the demonic spirit from the boy who suffer from severe convulsion. Jesus rebuked them for a lack of faith. He rebuked the evil spirit and commanded it to come out of the boy and it did. In Acts 3:1-10, Peter commanded a beggar in front of the temple gate called Beautiful, who was crippled in the legs to stand up and he immediately stand up and starting walking.

Gifts of Healing

Gifts of healing is the gift of healing different kinds of illnesses and diseases through the power of the Holy Spirit. Gifts of healing is related to the gift of faith. God will only heal you if you have faith that he can heal you. For example, those who touch Paul’s handkerchiefs and aprons got healed from their illnesses and diseases (Acts 19:12). Many people brought the sick to the street so that at least Peter’s shadow can touch them and they can get healed (Acts 5:15).

Working of Miracles

Working of miracles is a spiritual gift which enables you to do miracles. An example is the 10 plagues that God used Moses to perform in Egypt. Moses also did other miracles such as parting the Red Sea, the miracle of manna and quails, the miracle of Moses striking the rock and water coming out of it.

Prophecy is a spiritual gift that allows you to prophesy about the things that are going to happen in the future. Now, in the end times, God is giving many people prophetic visions and dreams so that they can warn people to repent and turn back to God. In Joel 2:28, God said he will pour out his Spirit on all people so that your sons and daughters can prophesy and old men can dream dreams.

Discerning of Spirits

Discerning of spirits is a spiritual gift which enable you to discern between the Spirit of God and demonic Spirit. The Holy Spirit can anoint you with the gift of the discerning of spirits so that you can easily discern the demonic spirits when praying for people. This gift protects you and guard your Christian life. For example, you can perceive things that are derived from the demonic spirits such as Pokemon comic books, palm reading, fortune telling, and etc. For example, a fortune telling girl who was possessed by a demon of fortune telling went around to tell people that Paul and his companions have come to tell people how to get saved and get eternal life. The fortune telling girl kept up on this for many days until Paul became troubled. He commanded the demonic spirit of fortune telling to come out of the girl (Acts 16:16-18).

Divers Kinds of Tongues

Divers kinds of tongues is the speaking of the tongue language. The tongue language is a mystery language that only God can understand (1 Corinthians 14:2). When you speak the tongue language, the Holy Spirit is interceding to God about your problems according to the will of God (Romans 8:26-27). If you want to receive the tongue language, you can ask your pastor to pray for you. You can ask the Holy Spirit to give you the gift of tongue language. In Ephesians 6:18, we should pray in the Spirit on all occasions along with all kinds of prayers and requests. We must be alert and keep on praying for the saints.

Interpretation of Tongues

Interpretation of tongues is the ability to interpret the tongue language. A person with the gift of the interpretation of tongues know what the person is speaking when he speaks in tongue language. Therefore, he can tell the church about it and edify the believers. Speaking in tongues only edify your ownself. You should pray in tongues and words. This is because you can edify the church when you pray in words (1 Corinthians 14:4-5).

Using the Spiritual Gifts to Build Up the Body of Christ

In Romans 12:6-8, we should use the spiritual gifts according to the grace given to us. If it is prophecy, you should prophecy in proportion to your faith. If it is service, you should serve. If it is teaching, you should teach. If it is exhort, you should exhort. If it is contribute, you should give in generosity. If it is leading, you should do it zealously. If it is acts of mercy, you should help others with cheerfulness. In 1 Peter 4:10-11, as each of us received the gift, we should use it to minister to one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God gives, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever.

In Ephesians 4:11-16, God gave some to be apostles, evangelists, shepherds, teachers, equip the saints for the work of the ministry for building up the body of Christ, so that we will no longer be children and be tossed around by the waves and carried about by every word of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. When you use your spiritual gift to serve God, you are helping the body of Christ to grow in every way into Christ, who is the head. Thus, equipping every joint of the body so that they work properly. This makes the body grow so that it will build itself up in love.
