Bible Study Outline on The Cost Of Discipleship

carry-your-cross-daily

Jesus Christ said that those who want to follow him and become his disciples must carry their cross every day. We must be willing to make sacrifices if we want to follow Jesus Christ. We must be willing to sacrifice our time, money, resources and efforts for the kingdom of God. For example, we should spend some time in prayer and reading the bible every day. We must give 10% of tithe to the church for every paycheck we receive. We must serve Jesus Christ by helping those in needs and doing some work at the church. Jesus sacrificed his life for us on the cross and now it is our turns to make sacrifices for God in return.

Romans 12:1-2 states that we must present our bodies as a living sacrifice for God by living a holy and pleasing life for God as this is a proper worship. Worship is not just singing psalms and hymns but it is also the way we conduct our lives. Your lifestyle must be in accordance with God’s commandments in the bible. We are not to compromise by living our lives according to traditions and customs. We must not incorporate the values and practices from other religions that we see good into our walk with God. The bible should be the only source where we draw our values from.

God’s commandments are not burdensome. You can abide in God’s commandments when you give your heart completely to God. If you have weakness, you can ask God to help you to obey his commandment and God will strengthen you when you pray sincerely.

We must always put Jesus Christ first, and not in second or third place in all that we do. You must leave all in order to follow Jesus Christ. For example, Christians must observe the Sabbath by not working and resting on that day. On this day, you should not work or make money at all as a way of putting Jesus Christ first in your life. Jesus must be first over money, family, career and etc. Some Christians argued that the observance of the Sabbath is only for the Jews in the Old Testament times but Christians are also obliged to observe it.

Each of us has a spiritual gift. There are 9 spiritual gifts endowed by the Holy Spirits on the believers. The spiritual gifts are bestowed on us so that we can use them to serve the church and edify others. You must practice your spiritual gift and not waste it away by doing nothing about it.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Forthe desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, thatthose who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:16-25 KJV)

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. (1 Corinthians 11:1-2 KJV)

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. (1 Peter 2:21 KJV)

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (Matthew 16:24 KJV)

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:21-23 KJV)

And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (1 John 2:3-4 KJV)

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:14-16 KJV)

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. (1 Corinthians 12:1-11 KJV)

If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (1 John 4:20 KJV)

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8 KJV)

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:34-35 KJV)

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12 KJV)

But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:34-40 KJV)

If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15 KJV)

As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: (1 Peter 1:14 KJV)

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29 KJV)

I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me. (Psalm 119:30 KJV)

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:3 KJV)

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2 KJV)
