What is the Church of Philadelphia in the Bible?
The church of Philadelphia was situated on the southeast side of Sardis. It was originally established by King Attallus from Pergamum in 150 B.C. King Attalus was well known for his love towards his brother, Eumenes. The Greek term Philadelphos means lover of a brother. This church is unique in that the Lord Jesus Christ did not have any complain against it. Thus, it has been described as the role model church.
God is in control of the events that take place on earth. No one can intervene God’s will. He open and close doors of opportunities. No one can close the doors he had opened or open the doors he had closed. The Lord tells the church of Philadelphia that he will open doors of opportunities for them to do his ministry. Paul was forbidden by the Holy Spirit to go into Asia and Bithynia to spread the gospel. Today, doors of gospel has been opened in many countries in that area including Hungary, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia. The members of the church of Philadelphia believed that God will open door of ministry for them so God has opened door for them.
The power of the Spirit is given to the church of Philadelphia because they are obedient in keeping God’s commandments. The two important points is a church must be planted in God’s words. The leaders and members of the church must know God’s words. Secondly, the church must be responsive to God’s calling and let him be used. Everyone in the church should be serving God.
The Jews in Philadelphia were persecuting the Christians in the church. These Jews are referenced as the Synagogue of Satan in the letter. The Jews who rejected Jesus Christ as the Messiah are no longer the people of God. The church is the true people of God even though they are made up of mostly Gentiles. However, in end time, the Jews will also come to acknowledge Jesus as their savior and become the people of God.
The Lord Jesus Christ praised the church of Philadelphia for their patient endurance in keeping God’s commandments. God promised to erect a pillar in the temple for those who are victorious. He will give the victorious ones 3 names including the name of God, the name of the city of his God, Jerusalem, and his new name on them. Name reveal the character of the named. Name of God means godliness. Name of the city, Jerusalem means the church as a pure bride for Jesus Christ the groom. Name of Jesus Christ means the person is saved and Jesus Christ’s work of redemption is finished.
If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15 KJV)
As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance (1 Peter 1:14 KJV)
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29 KJV)
I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me. (Psalm 119:30 KJV)
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:3 KJV)
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. (2 Timothy 2:20-21 KJV)
