Why did God Allow Concubines in the Bible?

The first man that commit polygamy in the bible is Lamech. Lamech is a descendan of Cain, who killed his brother Abel out of jealousy. Lamech committed murder when fighting with an enemy. Lamech took 2 wives for himself including Adah and Zillah. Originally, God created woman out of a man. Eve was created from one of the bone on the side of Adam.

After Eve was created, God gave her back to Adam to show the manner in which husbands and wives should live. Genesis 2:24 also mention that a man will leave his father and mother in order to be united to his wife. There should only be one father and one mother.

It is not sure why God allow concubines in the Old Testament. There are several possible reasons why God allow polygamy. One of the reasons may be that there are slightly more women than man in the world. In those days, there are lots of wars. Usually, the men will fight in the war. If they lost the war, only the women in the city will be left. Women are often carried away as slaves when their city is conqueredn. Another reason may be that women do not have the ability to become independent and provide for themselves. As a result, they often have to be given in marriage in order to make a living for themselves.

However, polygamy is viewed as a sin in the New Testament. Having multiple wives can cause a lot of problem. This can be seen in the example of King Solomon. Solomon fell into the sin of idolatry because he was led astray by his wives. One of the quality a spiritual leader sis the husband of one wife.

Husbands and wives must be faithful to each other. The bible says it is considered adultery when the husband dirvoce the spouse not of marital unfaithfulness and remarry. In the Old Testament times, Moses had to write out a divorce for couples who want to separate. That wasn’t what God intended from the beginning. God does not like us to divorce our spouses and remarry many times. If you have separated with your spouse, you should try to reconcile and stay with him or her.

Husbands should be the head of their wives. Whenever the wife wants to make a decision, she should first discuss with the husband to show that she respect his decision. Husbands and wives must be considerate toward each other.

Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. (Deuteronomy 17:17 KJV)

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. (1 Corinthians 7:2 KJV)

Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. (1 Timothy 3:12 KJV)

And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. (1 Kings 11:3 KJV)

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach (1 Timothy 3:2 KJV)

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:21-24 KJV)

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. (1 Peter 3:7 KJV)

Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. (Colossians 3:19 KJV)

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3 KJV)

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. (Ephesians 5:21-33 KJV)

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. (Genesis 3:16 KJV)

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives. (1 Peter 3:1 KJV)
